Term 2, Week 1
May. 7th, 2008 07:03 pmI'm back in London for two more nights. I have survived my first week back at school but I'm looking forward to coming home this weekend. It has been a fun but lonely week. I'm really looking forward for the assignments to be handed out so that I can keep myself busy.
Transport
So far, I have biked to school every day. Combined with my continued efforts at the gym, this has helped my legs feel rock solid - good news for my 9-month post-op exam at the end of the month. Commuting by bike has also helped me avoid Western's congested parking lots and the inevitable fight for a space in the morning.
Classes
I sat in my first class of the term on Monday, Open Source Software for Libraries. Being very familiar with OSS, I was hoping that the "for Libraries" part of the title would be the main focus of the class. No such luck. I stayed until the end of the class and then went to the Admin office and dropped it, along with another technical class that is below my skill level. (To satisfy my technical ambitions in this field, I'm going to have a look at the Evergreen source code during my spare time this term.)
To replace those two dropped courses, I have decided to challenge myself a little by taking some courses that are outside of my comfort zone. I took Literature Appreciation, in which I need to read one novel per week and perform a 30 minute seminar at the start of June; and I took Information Equity, which is very social science-y. I'm happy with both changes.
As a small bonus, my five courses are now crammed into three days, Tuesday through Thursday. This means that I will be able to come home more often, stay an extra day, and travel during more reasonable driving hours.
