A day of minor ups and downs
Apr. 9th, 2008 12:14 amI want to thank my prof for ending our last class early today. So early, in fact, that I was able to get to the pub having only missed 2.5 minutes of the Liverpool-Arsenal game. And what a game! Hours after the final whistle blew, my hands still felt raw from clapping. Liverpool won so it's on to the semi-final against Chelsea!
After the game I returned to school, fired up my laptop and checked my e-mail before starting my work. My course selection for next term hit a bit of a snag and they sent me a message. In fact, a lot of people got these little messages.
For our schedule next term, we rank 7 courses in order of preference and we're supposed to get 5 of the 7. I got 4 of 7. Not only did I not get the course that I ranked as my #2, but I wasn't even put on the waiting list. I have been told to pick my missing course from the "leftovers", none of which look very appealing to me.
Western's MLIS program has been good in many ways but their course selection process is a failure. I was warned of this by upper-term students and they were absolutely right. I realize that it's a tough problem to solve but somehow the University of Ottawa managed to schedule courses smoothly for my undergrad classes. Why not in this program, which has a much smaller student population?
There is an easy solution: admit fewer students. If hoards of students couldn't get their #2 class (let alone #3, which I and countless others also didn't get), then there is a huge gap between the amount of available profs and the amount of students signing up for classes. Either hire more profs for the popular classes (unlikely) or reduce the intake of students.
