My Letter to Royal
Dec. 10th, 2007 02:48 pmThere's a rumour circulating today that the Conservative government will delay the tabling of its copyright reform bill. The last time I checked, the Facebook group calling for Fair Copyright had over 12,000 members. After barely one week.
I posted many comments in the
canpolitik group when an article was posted about the bill in that forum. I'm not a lawyer by any stretch of the imagination, but observing the DMCA's misuse in the US for the past ten years has allowed me to accumulate a number of examples of the negative effects in my own industry. I wish I hadn't made so many typos in my comments but I hope I argued clearly enough to get my points across. I loved the discussion, though. I learned quite a few things.
I also wrote a letter to my new Member of Parliament, Royal Galipeau. It is possibly too long but I figured that he would be unlikely to call for further clarification, so I put in as many examples as I could. The one that I forgot to include was the Skylink case - how unpatriotic of me!
[Ed.: I am unlocking this post and making it publicly viewable. I originally locked it because, having re-read my letter, there were many parts that I wish I would have worded differently. It isn't often that I write for political effect. Nonetheless, here it is.]
