Canadian Copyright Law
Dec. 4th, 2007 09:27 pmOne thing that I have been fearing for the last decade will probably come true next week: Canada will follow the lead of the United States and adopt its own version of their Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
I blogged about this when copyright reform was mentioned in the speech from the throne in October. Reading through that post, I didn't exactly make my point as clearly as I should have.
Fortunately, some people with better communication skills are as upset as I am about this proposed legislation. Michael Geist is, as usual, staying on top of things, including his useful 30 Things You Can Do post. There's also a Facebook group that's being used for discussion.
I'll be writing to my new MP for the first time. I will be expressing my opposition to the bill and my displeasure at the government's lack of public consultation. I'm not sure he'll be sympathetic, though. I've gone from having pro-homo, pro-choice, pro-free speech centretown MPs to an anti-abortion, anti-gay, pro-censorship suburbanite MP. Hopefully he'll give me the benefit of the doubt and read my letter until the end.
If you're Canadian, I encourage to read up about what's on the table. Start with Michael Geist's blog entries. He can explain this far better than I. If you're at all concerned, I urge you to start by writing to your MP at the very least.
