The New Ottawa Cycling Plan

I've just had a quick look at Ottawa's new cycling plan, which will be implemented in two, 10-year phases. They somehow managed to reduce the budget for Phase I (the first ten years, 2008-2018) from nearly $50 million to $26 million. A look at the implementation plan indicates one method they used to come up with these "efficiencies."

On p. 160 of the PDF (just after page 6-4), they have maps displaying the implementation plan. Apparently, some routes which aren't even listed in the current cycling map are now listed as "Existing Cycling Routes" (in red). Taking an example from my own neighbourhood, Orleans Boulevard (which is definitely not cycling friendly!) is listed as an existing cycling route.

Lies!

I can't think of any way to get anywhere safely from my house on a bike... that really sucks...

Ok I could go to the crappy Loeb next to the Ray Friel center....woo-hah!

After living downtown and commuting to Bell's Corners by bike via NCC pathways and bike lanes, I find Orleans very disappointing. However, I'm glad that the cycling plan proposed a better network of cycling paths through the area. Hopefully we'll see them sooner rather than later in the 10 year implementation schedule.
