What's the point?
Mar. 21st, 2008 01:08 pmSome people are unhappy with LiveJournal's new policy for new accounts, so they decided to protest by encouraging people not to post to their journals today. That's about as useful as turning off your lights and electronics for an hour for one evening in the year in order to help fight climate change. Why bother changing your own daily habits when you can help "raise awareness?"
In other news, I'm back home for the weekend. This means that I get to sort through a small pile of mail. My CLA membership package arrived, as did the license renewal form from the Ministry of Transportation (it's an Emissions Test Year for me!).
I also got a handy little booklet from my Member of Parliament, Royal Galipeau, with the title "Are You Paying Too Much Tax?" It goes on to list all of the fantabulous tax breaks that the Conservatives have introduced into the income tax system. The idea is that I can keep them in mind while I do our income taxes this weekend.
Of course, none of these tax breaks apply to The Missus or myself. Even the claim that they "lowered income tax, retroactive this year" is a load of baloney. Paul Martin lowered income tax rates, the Conservatives raised them...then lowered them a year later to the exact same rate that Martin had previously set. Net change to my income taxes: 0%.
Another little tip for the government: if you want to play up your "green" image, why not put a big "printed on recycled paper" thing on the front or back of the thousands of booklets you send out? Oh...right...well, maybe next time you'll think of using recycled paper.
